Whilst Voice over IP has existed for some time in various forms it is only now that it is becoming mainstream , in the VoIP arena the SIP protocol  has won through and has become 'the' standard for the industry.

Most VoIP devices and services are SIP compliant and are compatible with each other. There are small differences in the implementation of  SIP in these devices and no two manufacturers are exactly the same.
